Exquisite Darkness
—The Brothers Quay Film Festival
Visual System Design / Branding
Objective
Coordinate a complex set of materials that must function together as a whole. The idea is also to marry multiple messages with divergent formats—all with a unified and holistic aesthetic. This aesthetic has to contain the essence of the director and their storytelling style. I choose the
Brothers Quay as the directors whom I am going to design the film festival for.
Approach
The Brothers Quay are influential stop-motion animators. Most of their animation films feature puppets made of doll parts and other organic and inorganic materials, often partially disassembled, in a dark, moody atmosphere. This project attempts to incorporate the Brothers Quay's artistic expression and five well-known films ( Nocturne Artificialia, The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer, Street of Crocodiles, Rehearsals For Extinct Anatomies, De Artificiali Perspectiva ) through consistent visual language and design deliverables that mesh together as an integrated system.
“What happens in the shadow, in the very grey regions, also interests us – all that is elusive and fugitive, all that can be said in those beautiful half tones, or in whispers, in deep shade. ”
